Here is something we all need to be aware of..the genetic engineering of seeds and herbicides on the next generation being fed these products:
After more than 10,000 OCA members complained to Congress, Congressman Sam Farr (D-CA), chair of the Organic Caucus, began investigating claims that the Martek Biosciences Life'sDHA and Life'sARA found in many certified organic infant formulas, baby foods and dairy products are GMOs. So far, he has learned:
- The National Organic Standards Board has approved a strain of non-GMO DHA-producing algae
- The DHA approved by the NOSB is NOT the kind used in infant formula and baby cereals
- Other strains of DHA-producing algae are genetically modified
This seems to indicate that:
The DHA that is currently used in certified organic infant formula and baby cereals is from the strain of DHA-producing algae that has been genetically engineered.
OCA Political Director Alexis Baden-Mayer has made a request to Rep. Farr and the USDA for more information (there's nothing yet on ARA) and hopes to have replies to share with you shortly!
And if you haven't already, please...

Growing Power in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Community Food Centers are local places where people can learn sustainable practices to grow, process, market, and distribute food. The prototype for Community Food Centers, as mentioned in our mission, is the Growing Power facility at 5500 W. Silver Spring Drive in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This historic two-acre farm is the last remaining farm and greenhouse operation in the City of Milwaukee. Since 1999, our Community Food Center has provided a wonderful space for hands-on activities, large-scale demonstration projects, and for growing a myriad of plants, vegetables, and herbs. In a space no larger than a small supermarket live some 20,000 plants and vegetables, thousands of fish, and a livestock inventory of chickens, goats, ducks, rabbits, and bees.
Their vision is "to inspire communities to build sustainable food systems that are equitable and ecologically sound, creating a just world, one food-secure community at a time. "
I was delighted to see all that is happening here and the partnerships created in the past 18 years.
